Step Up to the Mic: Kyoto's Premier Friday Night Open Mic Comedy Scene

5 min read

Every Friday at 20:00 (doors 19:00), Ki Bar in Pontocho turns into Kyoto's friendliest comedy laboratory. The Kyoto Friday Night Open Mic & Local Social is an open stage for local expats, students, first-timers and visiting comics testing fresh material. Entry is free — pay what you feel — with a 1 drink minimum.

Prepare a 3–5 minute set

Most open mic spots run three to five minutes. Pick one or two ideas you genuinely find funny — a cultural misunderstanding, a train story, a conbini discovery — and trim everything that isn't building to a laugh. Say it out loud a few times and time yourself; going over your time is the fastest way to lose the room.

Workshops and coaching before the show

New to stand-up? Ask about our pre-show workshops and coaching. Experienced local comedians share how to structure a joke, find your voice, use the microphone and handle the moment a joke doesn't land.

A supportive, non-judgmental community

The Friday crowd knows open mic is where comedy is born. Some jokes fly, some fall flat, and everyone claps you on and off the stage either way. Whether you have done a hundred sets or zero, people are rooting for you.

Join the Kyoto Comedy Discord

After your set, join the official Kyoto Comedy Discord server to swap set feedback, share recordings, find writing partners and hear first about open spots on Saturday showcases. Ask any host on the night for an invite.

How to sign up
